Moving Gully System

The Moving Gully System (MGS) is a horticulture technology that has proven to be a reliable solution for sustainable greenhouse cultivation of leafy greens and herbs.

It comprises a network of gullies that move plants through different stages of cultivation, from seeding, to planting, to harvesting. The gullies are moved from stage to stage at pre-programmed intervals, speed and direction via an electro-mechanical system.

As the plants grow, space between the gullies gradually expand, to ensure each plant has optimum spacing at different stages of growth. The system also provides precise amounts of nutrient-infused water (using the Nutrient Film Technique) to nurture the plants. MGS is a flexible system that can accommodate varying environmental and climatic changes, this ensures the best conditions for plant growth.

By allowing specific adjustments to its programming in order to accomodate varying environmental and climatic changes, the MGS offers a flexible system that ensures the best conditions for plant growth.

Holla Fresh

Tantanoola (SA), Australia

When increasing costs of labour and energy were threatening productivity at Holla Fresh, the Moving Gully System was engineered to improve irrigation and harvesting efficiency.

“The Moving Gully System significantly reduced our labour usage, and therefore the handling of crops, which, in itself, helped to minimise crop damage. The automation brought down our transplanting and harvesting time to half, leading to overall lower running costs. Production at Holla Fresh skyrocketed from 55%, when we first started in 2000, to 92% after the MGS was put into operation.”

Griffith (NSW), Australia

In search of a sustainable and consistent method to generate high yield, while ensuring a fast turnaround of fresh produce for their consumers, the family-owned farm, Fresh Technique, employed the use of the Moving Gully System as a viable, long term solution.

“This technological innovation enables us to produce year-round, using minimal water and fertiliser resources with zero agricultural run off and maximising cost efficiency. We are able to significantly reduce time in the value chain, from raw product to finished (shelf ready) healthy meal options in less than 48 hours.”
